When did renewable energy start?

When did renewable energy start?

Have you ever wondered when renewable energy began? It’s not a new thing, you know. Its history goes back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations saw power in the sun, wind, and water. They really did. But here’s the thing, modern renewable tech started much later. It began to form in the late 1800s. And wow, it has changed so much since then. So much.

Wind energy? That goes way back. Think ancient Persia. They used windmills there. Smart, right? They ground grain and pumped water with them. Then, by the 1800s, windmills popped up in the US. Mostly for farming. This early use of wind was important. [I believe] this early ingenuity was truly something. It really set the stage for today’s wind turbines.

Solar energy also has an old story. Greeks and Romans used sunlight for heating. Pretty clever. But making electricity from sun? That took time. Bell Labs invented the photovoltaic cell in 1954. That was a huge moment, [honestly]. This tech turned sunlight straight into electricity. A massive step for renewable energy. It’s no secret that this changed everything. What a breakthrough.

The 1970s? A real turning point for renewables. The oil crisis was a big push. Prices shot up. Supplies got tight. So, governments and researchers looked for other options. They really had to. Lots of money went into solar and wind tech then. This led to better, more efficient systems. For instance, the Solar Energy Research Institute started in 1977. Its job was to improve solar tech in the US. A necessary move.

Then came the 80s and 90s. Renewable energy started getting more attention. People became more aware of the environment. Worries about climate change grew. This made sustainable energy more interesting. Denmark, for instance, invested a lot in wind. They made big improvements in turbine tech. Now, Denmark is a leader in wind power. A lot of their electricity comes from it. Quite an achievement, don’t you think?

Late 90s, early 2000s – solar tech really took off. Photovoltaic cell costs dropped a lot. This was great news. It made solar power easier to get. And more attractive for people and businesses. So, solar panels started appearing everywhere. Governments helped too. Incentives and subsidies in many countries pushed this growth. It seems to me this was a critical period for solar.

Now, the 21st century. We’ve seen a huge jump in renewable energy use. What’s behind it? Better tech. Government action. And more people understanding climate change. Big companies are now in the game. They focus on solar, wind, and bioenergy. There’s a worldwide push for cleaner energy. Many countries have set big goals. The EU, for example, wants to be carbon-neutral by 2050. They’re really focusing on more renewables. [I am excited] by this global commitment. It’s truly inspiring.

Renewable energy isn’t just an ‘alternative’ anymore. It’s a key part of our global energy. Wind, solar, hydro, geothermal – they are all so important. They help cut down greenhouse gas emissions. IRENA says renewables made over 29% of global electricity in 2020. And that number keeps going up. That’s encouraging, isn’t it? Such good news.

Also, think about electric vehicles (EVs). More and more people are driving them. This means we need more renewable energy. As EV use grows, so does the need for clean electricity. Many groups and projects support this shift. They all promote sustainable ways of living. It just makes sense.

Want to know more? Especially about health and science? You can check out our pages. We have one on Health. And another on Science. These parts explain how renewables affect us. They also cover the science of clean energy tech. From my perspective, understanding this connection is vital.

Looking ahead, the future for renewables seems really bright. New ideas in energy storage are coming. Smart grids are getting better. Energy efficiency is improving too. All this leads to a stronger, more sustainable energy system. [Imagine] a future powered entirely by nature. This journey from ancient times to now shows our lasting commitment. We’re still working to use nature’s power for a cleaner world.
