Macmillan launches information drop-in service for Chinese people living with cancer, UK

UK - Macmillan Cancer Relief launched the first Chinese cancer information drop-in service in Soho on Monday, 21 September. In collaboration with the Chinese National Healthy Living Centre there will be a cancer information drop-in service providing information in Chinese and English, access to support groups and signposting to other health professionals based at the Westminster Chinese Library located in the Charing Cross library every Tuesday.

Chinese people living with cancer will greatly benefit from the service. The Chinese population is one of the largest and well-established minority ethnic communities in the UK with around 247,000 residents.

Amy Butler, Macmillan Chinese Information worker, says,

'The CIRCLE study�, funded by Macmillan Cancer Relief, found that Chinese people lack information on prevention and the causes of cancer, early symptoms and screening programmes. Since English is not a first language for many Chinese people living in the UK, information is needed in Chinese and in different formats. There is a demand for more culturally appropriate information on better living conditions, healthier lifestyles and cancer prevention and treatment.'
