A Guide to Shopping Online - Save Money Every Time with Search, Special Offers and Cash Back
By Theo Corbett

The internet is an incredible place to go shopping. It is safer than ever, there are no queues and there is plenty of impartial informative advice just a click away to help you through the most confusing of purchases. But better than all these factors combined is the price you pay. From searching to special offers to cash back, this is a guide to internet shopping that means you'll never need set foot on a high street again.

1) Start with a search engine. If you are looking for a digital camera then type 'digital camera reviews' into a search engine. Run through a variety of the pages that you are presented with. Try to get an understanding of what real everyday people think is the best digital camera available. Which take the best photos, which are easy to use, what common problems (eg battery life) do people encounter?

2) Once you have an idea of a good model you want to buy then type the model number into a search engine along with review, eg 'brand xx00-mmx review'. Really check to see if everyone is happy with that particular model. The more reviews you read the better.

3) Now, time to buy and to start saving money. Search the internet for 'price comparison websites'. Visit several price comparison sites and each time enter the model number into the search box of the price comparison site. The reason you should visit several price comparison sites is because they often show results from different retailers. The more sites you use the more actual stores you will search. After this you should have found the ones with the cheapest prices. Make a note of these and check to see if the price you have been quoted includes delivery.

4) Now join a 'cash back shopping' website. Type 'cash back shopping' into a search engine (do some more research and you will quickly discover the best ones). Cash back shopping websites have relationships with retailers any they allow you to claim back significant cash discounts on the every day items you buy. Within the cash back shopping website look for one of the retailers you found earlier that offers a good price. Then click through from here and buy the item.

A great job done! You have found the best product you could, got the best price available and even got a cash back discount on top of the best price you found! Now, you couldn't have done that on the high street, and you'd probably still be looking for a parking space in the time you finished you entire online shop!

7 tech gift ideas for dads, grads

MIKE WENDLAND, Detroit Free Press

It's time to do our annual shopping for dads and grads and - as usual - high-tech gizmos and gadgets are at the top of everyone's wish lists. Here are some suggestions for this year:

1. Apple's MacBook: Apple Computer (www.apple.com) has converted all its computers to run with super-fast Intel Core Duo micropr/http://www.fda.gov/ocessors, meaning that with a free Apple program called Boot Camp, Apple computers run both Apple and Windows software.

The MacBook line replaces the iBook entry-level laptops. Starting at $1,099, they come with a crisp 13-inch screen, built-in wireless connectivity, an iSight camera for video chatting and the versatile iLife '06 suite of multimedia programs for music, video, blogging and digital imaging.

2. The D/http://www.fda.gov/ocuPen: Planon Solutions (http://planon.com) makes this handy 8.5-inch-long scanner that looks like an oversized pen. The black-and-white version sells for $100, a color one is $200 and the deluxe model is $300. Wave it over a picture, d/http://www.fda.gov/ocument, restaurant menu, letter, magazine article, whatever ... and it's scanned into memory that can be downloaded to a computer.

3. Digital Photo Frame: This is from Brookstone (www.brookstone.com) and, at $300, it's expensive. But it is very cool, especially if your dad or grad has a lot of digital pictures. It's an 8-inch picture frame with slots for memory chips containing digital pictures. They're displayed on a bright high-resolution screen, either as single shots you can change whenever you want or as a revolving slide show. You can also download pictures into the frame's built-in memory directly from your PC.

If $300 is too much, you can spend $50 and get a key chain version that shows up to 56 digital images on a one-inch screen.

4. IPod accessories: Griffin Technology (www.griffintechnology.com) has a bunch of add-ons for the popular Apple music player.

New is the $40 TuneFlex, a d/http://www.fda.gov/ock and charger for the popular iPod Nano that plays the Nano through the car radio's tape cassette slot. The TuneFlex itself consists of a snug cradle on a flexible steel neck that adjusts to any angle or elevation. You plug it into the 12-volt cigarette lighter on the dash; it also charges the Nano.

5. SmartShare: Also from Griffin, this is a $15 headphone splitter for the iPod or other personal players that lets you plug in two sets of earphones to share your favorite tunes with someone else. It's perfect for two on the beach or on long rides.

6. USB beverage chiller: This gizmo plugs into your computer's USB port on one end and holds a can or bottle on the other. It keeps the beverage at a perfect 45 degrees. It's $40, available from Red Envelope (www.redenvelope.com).

7. Diskgo USB Watch Drive: Your dad or grad will feel like a secret agent with this fully functioning wristwatch that has a 1-gigabyte flash memory drive built in. A USB cable and plug unfold from the band to connect to a PC or Mac. It sells for $110 from Edge Tech (www.edgetechcorp.com).

3 Ways To Save Money Shopping Online

More and more people are shopping online each year. The growing popularity of online shopping is easy to explain – online shopping offers greater convenience, and better prices than any other shopping method.

If you follow the tips in this article, you can take advantage of great savings available to you online.

Tip #1: Use Comparison shopping sites

Comparison shopping sites, such as bizrate, shopzilla, shopping.com, Froogle, Yahoo Shopping, and many others, are extremely valuable tools. Using one of these sites, you can find the cheapest online retailer for the product you wish to purchase. In most cases, the sites can calculate shipping and tax for you as well.

Plus, these comparison shopping sites offer unbiased ratings and reviews on both products and retailers, so you can be sure you're getting a good product from a dependable online retailer.

Tip #2: Use Online Markets

You can save a considerable amount of money by shopping on online marketplaces, such as Ebay or Amazon Marketplace. These sites allow you to purchase directly from individuals or discount sellers. You can often buy brand new products at steep discounts. Just like the comparison shopping sites, online marketplace sites offer ratings and reviews to help you make your decision.

Books and CDs are items that you can get especially good deals on at online market places. Electronics are not generally as cheap.

Tip #3: Sign Up for affiliate programs

If you buy from a particular merchant alot, you should consider joining their affiliate program. If their affiliate program rules allow it, you can earn a commission on all of your own purchases. Just be sure that you click on your affiliate link to make your purchase.

Of course, be sure to check the affiliate program terms of service to be sure that it's OK to make personal purchases via your affiliate link.

Save Money Shopping Online with Promo and Coupon Codes

Have you noticed lately that almost every online retailer has added an "Insert Promo Code Here" box to their checkout page?  Even Paypal allows sellers to accept Promo or Coupon Codes as a way to offer discounts to their customers.

So what are Promo Codes, and how can they save you money each time you shop online?

Promo (or Coupon) Codes are nothing more than a string of letters or numbers (or both) that, when input into the checkout page of a participating retailer, will reduce the sales price of the item(s) you just bought.  These codes can reduce your purchase price by 5-50%, depending on the size of the discount offered by the retailer.

One of the biggest retailers online, Dell Computers, has codes available that will save you $300 or more when you buy a computer online.  I personally know a woman who just saved $350 when buying her new laptop from Dell, just by using one of these little known "secret codes."

The trick, however, is finding the latest code numbers, and using the ones which will save you the most money.  These codes are notorious for having a short lifespan...what retailer wants to have a 35% Off Promo Code floating around cyberspace indefinitely?  That would kill their long term profits.

So these codes tend to have short expiration dates.  If you find one, you usually need to use it fast.  Also, it's good to try and locate several sources of codes, as one website might have a 15% Off code, while another will have a 25% off code, but one that is only good for 24 hours.

So where do you find these codes?

A Google search is always a good place to start (or Yahoo, or MSN, or whatever search engine is your favorite).  You can try a general search under terms like "Promo Code" or "Coupon Code" and you will dig up a treasure trove of sites that keep track of these codes.

A better way of searching is to be ultra-specific in your search.  If you are searching for a Dell Computer Promo Code, use that as your search term.  If you are looking for a code from Office Max, search for "Office Max Promo Code" or "Office Max Coupon Code."  Either term should get you started in the right direction.

A third way of searching is to use the resource available at PromoCodeSource.com, which is an .exe program that automatically compiles results from over 60 sites dedicated to the search and publication of Promo and Coupon Codes.  This is how I save a TON of time when I am looking to shop and save online.

I've also found a bunch of Dell Codes for sale on Ebay.  Do a search for "Dell Coupon Codes" (but don't use the "  "'s...).   The last time I did one of these searches, I found over 200 codes for sale with prices ranging from $.99 all the way up to $9.99.

And it makes sense for someone about to spend $1,200 on a computer to spend $10 on ebay to buy a coupon code that will save him or her $300-$350 on that purchase.  Of course, it would be cheaper to spend a little time searching for those codes for free online, but some people would rather save the time and spend a few bucks to save a whole lot more.

Which bring me to my final point about these coupon codes: There is a HUGE market on ebay for people who will spend the time to find the codes and put up an auction.  You may not make a fortune on any one sale, but you could end up selling dozens of codes each week for a few bucks apiece.  Use your research skills to find the latest and greatest codes, or simply search the web using the PromoCodeSource.com compilation program and start a little side business on ebay as the Promo Code King (or Queen!).

But no matter how you find the codes, just start finding and using them when you shop online.  For a few minutes of effort, you can put hundreds, even thousands of dollars back in your pocket each time you shop online.
