Hands-on learning down on the Farm

Most little kids love to pick fresh fruit and veggies ... for about five minutes, until their attention starts to wander. It makes it hard to justify driving all the way out to rural farms, especially when tours are only for organized groups.

One solution is Redmond's The South 47 Farm, which offers a popular Farm Tots program for age 5 and under three mornings a week. Located just a couple miles off Interstate 405, the farm drew some 60 participants on a recent morning for its $5 class (adults free).

The loosely organized program starts with a short educational presentation with songs and sign language, followed by a simple nature-themed craft or activity. Each week the theme changes (flowers, bugs, seeds, etc.) so repeat visitors won't get bored. Then the group breaks up, with folks taking turns on a 10-minute tractor-pulled hay ride (seating about 25 people) and picking a child-size portion of a seasonal crop (often berries).

Families can stay longer and wander through additional U-pick fields (we opted for a handful of cucumbers to try pickling), paying the price per pound. There's also a small market with already picked produce. Depending on the season, families might find blueberries, marionberries, squash, cucumbers, cauliflower, greens and cut flowers.

No reservations required; just show up a little early to pay. The program runs at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday through October. From Interstate 405, take the Northeast 124th Street exit and head east on 124th for two miles. The farm is on the left just before the intersection with Woodinville-Redmond Road.
