GARDEN PLOT: Think ahead for a colorful fall yard

If your garden lacks late-season flowers, make a list of plants to add next spring. By next September, there will be plenty of color to admire.

Here are several late bloomers to consider:

Calamint. A finely textured contrast to ornamental grasses like miscanthus, calamint grows into a small, woody shrub. In late summer, it produces clouds of tiny white or blue flowers. Plant in spring in full to partial sun. In subsequent years, shape or cut it back in early spring.

Dahlias. These tender plants grow from tuberous roots planted after danger of spring frost and when the soil is warm. They grow in summer and bloom until frost. Then, gardeners either lift the roots, storing them indoors until late spring, or treat dahlias as annuals, buying new ones each year.

Goldenrod. Fireworks is a cultivated variety with a more garden-friendly, refined growing habit than many wild goldenrods. Plant in spring in sun and well-drained soil.

New England asters. Purple Dome is a standout, along with the bright pink Alma Potschke. These workhouses thrive in sun and well-drained soil. Plant in spring.

Sedum. Autumn Joy is the staple fall bloomer in many gardens but there are other options for late summer-early fall flowers. Matrona has burgundy stems and gray-green leaves. Neon has candy pink flowers and a slightly earlier bloom. These sedums may be planted from spring into early fall in sun. Choose a spot where they won't be fertilized; otherwise, growth gets floppy.
