Jonny supports kid's fitness campaign
A celebrity-backed campaign to make children more active was launched today in efforts to tackle increasing obesity levels in the UK.
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is using its Well Fit! initiative to target 11 and 12-year-olds joining secondary school this year.
The campaign, launched to coincide with World Heart Day on Sunday, is supported by stars including rugby ace Jonny Wilkinson.
The BHF said the future forecast for child health was bleak and if the rise in childhood obesity continued, at least half of youngsters in England would be obese by 2020.
The charity said this would spell disaster for the heart health of future generations as obesity increased the likelihood of coronary heart disease.
As part of the campaign, the Well Fit! magazine will be distributed to schools, including a free CD Rom and interviews with pop stars including Rachel Stevens and Blazin' Squad.
Parents and teachers will also be given materials outlining how they can encourage youngsters to become more active.
The BHF's Couch Kids report also calls on the Government to make a commitment to funding its national Healthy School Standard beyond 2006 and to start a public education campaign to motivate young people to eat a healthy diet and adopt a more active lifestyle.
Nicki Cooper, the BHF's head of education, said: "We all remember what an important step starting secondary school is.
"We think this is the perfect opportunity to talk to young people and arm them with the ammunition to get active and avoid slipping into the bad habits which can last a lifetime.
"The Well Fit! campaign aims to ensure that the ticking time bomb of obesity is defused before it's too late."
Campaign supporter Jonny Wilkinson added: "It would be great to see more young people hooked on being active.
"I know how fantastic it feels to succeed in the sport I love but you don't have to play for England to have fun and keep in good shape.
"Kicking a ball around in the park, skateboarding, dancing or maybe even having a go at rock climbing are all great ways to get out there and get your heart pumping."
More information about the campaign is available at www.bhf.org.uk/wellfit. An interactive website for young people has also been set up at www.yheart.net.
