Guinea cholera deaths reach 143

CONAKRY - A cholera outbreak has killed at least 143 people in Guinea so far this year but the death rate has slowed since June, a U.N. report showed on Sunday.

Cholera, an acute diarrhoeal illness caused by a water-borne bacterium, is a seasonal problem in much of West Africa. An outbreak last year killed more than 800 people across several countries in the region, and has continued in southern Guinea.

"The epidemic which has hit the country since April 2005 remains of concern. From January to July 2006, the Public Health Ministry has notified 1,623 cases of which 143 died," the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a report.

"More substantial funding is essential to control it."

The death toll was a significant increase on the 60 reported dead by late April, although the mortality rate has slowed, dropping to five deaths out of 134 cases in July from nine dead out of 412 in June, it said.

The outbreak has hit the southern town of Gueckedou worst.

The former French colony on Africa's Atlantic coast has one third of the world's known reserves of bauxite, the raw material used to make aluminum. But the majority of its 10 million people live in poverty, surviving on less than $1 a day.
