Base will keep laundry line put
Q: We have a "solar dryer" (the type that looks like an extra large TV antenna) which is a pole with arms and ropes upon which to hang washing. We stick it in a hole in the ground, propping it up with sticks, but the pole falls down (complete with laundry) all the time. I thought of cement, but wonder if the pole wouldn't work in the hole and flop over again.
A: First, a little explanation: cement is an ingredient in concrete, which is a mixture of sand, water, cement and rock (along with other ingredients). Other cement-based products like stucco, brick mason's mortar, grout, and so forth have differing ingredients, all with cement as the glue, if you will. In many ways, cement-based products are a lot like cooking with flour. Flour alone makes a really dry and tasteless cookie without much structural integrity. Add water, eggs, baking powder, sugar and other things and you have something worth eating.
As for the answer to your question, you bet a concrete base will hold your laundry rack! The best example I can think is our beloved Space Needle, which even looks a bit like your laundry rack. Granted, only a little bit, but let's run with it anyway. While at first glance the Space Needle looks like it would tip over in a high wind, you can be assured it's not going anywhere, because the center of gravity is exactly five feet above ground level, according to my favorite Space Needle elevator operator, Cathy Conner-LaPlante.
The center of gravity was originally at ground level but it rose when the Skyline Level was built in the 1980s. No, you can't tip it over by pushing really hard at six feet, but the thought did cross my mind, I must confess. Ask Cathy if she enjoys her job and she replies, "It has its ups and downs, but I get a raise every few minutes." Sorry, I couldn't resist.
To engineer your own little Space Needle foundation, dig a hole two feet or so deep with a post hole digger, and put in a few bags of concrete pre-mix (meaning the ingredients are already mixed, you just add water) and wait a day. At sixty or eighty pounds dry per bag you will quickly lower that laundry rack's center of gravity.
If you want to be really fancy, find a piece of steel pipe that will slip over the outside of the main pole. You could then sink the larger diameter section of pipe into the concrete, leaving it flush with the ground, and remove the rack simply by lifting it out when you don't need it, it loses its viability, or you tire of looking at it.
