• A lawn mower and gas can. People moving from apartments won't have lawn mowers and don't even think about 'em until spring rolls around.
Brand-new models can be had for not much more than $100, making them a nearly disposable appliance, like a VCR. Heck, I paid almost that much to have one serviced and sharpened years ago. But then again, I haven't had to gift-wrap a lawn mower recently.
• A cordless drill (yes, with removable tips). Get one with an assortment of screws and bits; it's something anyone can and will use.
Winter tasks
While were talking holidays, let me encourage you to pay attention to these basic winter maintenance tasks. (If necessary, you can cite these must-do's as an excuse to get out of shopping trips.)
• Fall leaves need to be removed from the gutters and downspouts before the heavy rains come. Patch any holes or leaks and support sagging sections.
• Furnace servicing is much more comfortable when performed before the system actually quits, and will pay dividends with extended equipment life.
• After the next heavy rainstorm, check the basement or crawlspace for leakage.
