Mortgage firm causes aftershock
How would you feel if you came home from work to find a letter saying - quite mistakenly - that you'd fallen behind on your mortgage payments? How would you feel if the letter then outlined specific options, scary stuff like "a pre-foreclosure sale?"
Chances are you'd fret all night, waiting until morning when you could reach the mortgage company, which is on the East Coast.
This isn't just a nightmare. It's what happened last week to some homebuyers in the Puget Sound region.
One said, "It felt like a second earthquake."
When she contacted the company the next morning, she was told the letter from Cenlar (Central Loan Administration & Reporting) in Ewing, N. J., had been sent to her in error.
How did it happen? Cenlar senior vice president Dave Miller said the company had intended to send a letter reassuring homebuyers affected by the Feb. 28 earthquake. He explains, "We were attempting to be very proactive, to say 'We're here to help.' What went out wasn't the best letter."
Miller says 1,300 "you-have-fallen-behind" letters were sent to Washington homebuyers. He estimates 90 were not delinquent. A letter of apology should reach people this week.
Turkey Day: The calendar says March, but "Food and Wine" is now shooting its Thanksgiving feature at the home of Tom Douglas, the man behind the Dahlia Lounge, Palace Kitchen and Etta's.
Douglas is preparing a "traditional Northwest Thanksgiving dinner." So what's that? Would you believe a salt-brined turkey with King Boletus mushroom bread stuffing alongside a charcoal-grilled chinook salmon stuffed with lemons, onions and fennel?
That's just the latest news from Douglas, who has been reaping raves for his first book, "Tom Douglas' Seattle Kitchen." The New York Times' Regina Schrambling concluded, "Descriptions of local seafood are also worth the price of the book, since Seattle is almost the Venice of the United States - things are hauled out of the water there you won't see anywhere else. Maybe it's OK if Douglas presents himself as the Paul Bunyan of Northwest kitchens."

Heap of loving: Although they met only a few months ago, Seattle residents Merton Dawley and Kathryn Stockamp immediately knew they were meant for each other.
Earlier this month, Dawley, 91, and Stockamp, 81, exchanged wedding vows in the chapel at Providence Mount St. Vincent, where they both live. The couple aren't apt to forget their wedding anniversary: The date, March 9, coincided with Dawley's 91st birthday.

Trendsetter: Edmonds resident William Hall reports the Market Street Grill in Ballard is now serving "The Ballard Martini." Market Street Grill Bartender Ted Bratrude gets credit for creating the cocktail, which features pickled herring in place of the olive. Hall's critique: "fabulous."
