Garlic Improves Lung Blood Vessel Function
Got garlic breath? Then you probably have good pulmonary blood flow, too. Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have found that the active metabolic in garlic, called allicin, improves pulmonary hypertension - tight blood vessels in the lungs.
This confirms earlier study results that proved garlic causes vasorelaxation. Because these results have only been demonstrated in mice, researchers are planning to begin human studies.
In a news release, David D. Ku, PhD indicated that just two cloves of garlic a day would be the equivalent to the amount of garlic given to the rats in the study that showed these results.
Dr. Ku told medicalnewstoday.com that "obtaining concrete scientific data to substantiate many of these claims has remained elucive...because it has been difficult to accurately detect and quantify the active garlic metabolite."
But, what can it hurt to add a little garlic to your diet?
