Swimmers add loving strokes for ill children
Toledo Blade - Toledo,OH,USA

KELLEYS ISLAND - It was a beautiful day for a five-hour swim.
You could just see the white swim caps of Cindra Mielke and Jeni Hammond as they made the final smooth, powerful strokes that brought them into Portside Marina around 11:30 yesterday morning.
The Erie County women had departed from Put-in-Bay, swimming the 6.8 miles between the two islands to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They had collected about $5,000 at last count, with donations still coming in.
"Hey, Cindra - want to swim back?" Ms. Hammond asked cheerily back on dry land again.
This is the 12th Kelleys Island Benefit Swim for Ms. Hammond, 49, of Perkins Township, and Ms. Mielke, 46, of Castalia.
It all started when the friends decided to swim from Marblehead to Kelleys Island "for the fun of it," Ms. Mielke said. The four-mile trek started a yearly tradition to raise money for area children.
Since then, Ms. Mielke and Ms. Hammond have raised more than $80,000 for Make-A-Wish.
A crowd cheered the women on as they pulled through their final stretch.
"They're a couple of angels from the sea," a bystander said.
Among the crowd were Claudia Rosiar, 6, and Gina Munafo, 13, the two girls for whom Ms. Mielke and Ms. Hammond were working so hard.
Gina lives in Huron, Ohio, and was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in spring, 2005. She's finished with her treatments and visits the hospital every few months for a checkup.
"When Gina was diagnosed, they said when it's done, you should do Make-A-Wish," said her mother, Marisa Munafo. "It's hard to believe almost a year later, here we are."
Gina's wish is to see how a movie is made in California. "It's a chance to do something you couldn't do in real life," she said of the foundation.
"Every year, we donate to Make-A-Wish, and now we're doing Make-A-Wish," Ms. Munafo said. "You never know what's going to happen."
Many in the crowd wore fire-engine red T-shirts. These are the friends and family of Claudia, declaring their love. "Team Claudia," their chests proclaim. "We're behind you 100%!"
Claudia of Port Clinton was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic lymphoma in November. Her wish is to go to Disney or take a Disney cruise.
Both Ms. Hammond and Ms. Mielke are mothers. Ms. Mielke said it's a passion for children that drives them do make the charity swim every year.
Gina and Claudia were among the first to get hugs after the swimmers emerged from the water, slightly breathless but smiling.
"I'm a little wet," Ms. Mielke laughed as she detangled herself from the embrace.
