Blistering heat wave to linger in US Northeast till Thurs
The intense heat wave blanketing the U.S. Northeast and Midwest will linger for another day or so, longer than meteorologists had predicted, according to the latest forecasts.
Meanwhile, Florida and other states along the Gulf of Mexico, the nation's key oil and natural gas producing and refining region, kept an eye on Tropical Storm Chris which the National Hurricane Center forecast would strengthen into a hurricane within 36 hours.
On its current track, Chris will pass between Florida and Cuba and break into the Gulf of Mexico within a week, the NHC projected.
Prices for natural gas, burned to generate the record-breaking amounts of electricity used to run air conditioners in the Northeast and Midwest, were up along with the temperatures and the possibility Chris could get into the Gulf and disrupt the region's oil and natural gas facilities.
Natural gas futures gained almost 10 percent in early trading Wednesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange to the $8.30s per British thermal unit.
For many in the Northeast, the hottest day of the year is still to come with temperatures expected in the triple digits in Washington, Philadelphia and New York on Wednesday and Thursday. The mercury in New York could reach 104 Fahrenheit today, according to Meteorlogix.
Moreover, high humidity across the eastern third of the country was making the weather feel much hotter than the readings on thermometers - up to 120 degrees in some places, AccuWeather said.
The high-pressure system which is now stuck over the Northeast last week caused the deadly heat wave that lingered over California longer than first forecast.
Earlier this week, meteorologists had predicted the heat wave would break in the Midwest Tuesday night and leave the Northeast Wednesday night.
But now they forecast the heat wave will persist in the Midwest until Wednesday night and linger in the Northeast until Thursday night.
Eating processed meats raises stomach cancer risk
August 2, 2006 05:53:12 AM PST
Eating more processed meats such as bacon, sausage and smoked ham increases the risk of stomach cancer, Swedish scientists said on Wednesday.
A review of 15 studies showed the risk of developing stomach cancer rose by 15 to 38 percent if consumption of processed meats increased by 30 grams (1 ounce) per day, the Karolinska Institute said in a statement.
Stomach cancer accounts for nearly one tenth of total deaths from cancer, the institute said.
The research, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, collated studies covering 4,704 individuals between 1966 and 2006 and showed "unequivocal" results, the institute said.
"Nobody had carried out this type of analysis into processed meats and stomach cancer," said Susanna Larsson, one of the authors of the study at the institute.
"And our results from a mean value show very clearly that there is an association between increased consumption of processed meat products and stomach cancer."
The institute said processed meats were often salted or smoked, or had nitrates added to them, in order to extend their shelf-life which could be connected to the increased risk of stomach cancer, the fourth most common type of cancer.
"We hope that further studies will clarify the interaction between the consumption of processed meats and other factors, such as other dietary factors and the effects of different bacteria on the incidence of stomach cancer," Larsson said.
