Growth and Your 8- to 12-month-old
Your baby is continuing her phenomenal growth in many ways - she continues to grow in size, and now she is moving on her own, perhaps even walking! All this activity, and her continued proficiency at handling solid foods, means once again the variables affecting her growth, especially weight, are many.
How Much Should My Baby Grow?
At 8 months old, many babies weigh around 14 to 18 pounds, although the range of normal is wider than that. By the time she blows out her first birthday candle, your baby will probably have just about tripled her birth weight and will probably stand about 28 to 32 inches tall.
The growth of head size slows down considerably after the first six months; an average baby's head measures about 17.5 inches at 8 months and 18 inches by one year. By this age you are probably not seeing your child's doctor monthly anymore, so look for measurements to be taken and a chart to be plotted at her 1-year checkup. Babies are individuals, too, so make sure to compare your baby's growth with her own pattern, not with the growth of other babies. As long as her growth is steady, there is probably no reason to worry.
Should I Be Concerned?
Parents' concerns about growth often center around eating habits. Is your skinny baby a picky eater? Do you think she's not getting enough to eat? Chances are that everything is fine. Most babies eat only enough to satisfy their hunger, which in most cases is enough to supply them with the energy they need.
Your baby's weight, length, and head circumference have been measured since birth and plotted on a growth chart at your child's doctor's office. This is where you should start looking if you have questions about how your baby measures up. Your doctor can help you see if your baby's growth is moving upward at her own personal pace.
If you do notice a sudden drop in weight gain, ask yourself a few questions:
Has your baby been ill? A couple of days of not eating, combined with vomiting or diarrhea, can quickly use up body weight that will take a while for your baby to regain.
Has your baby just taken her first steps, or is she suddenly zooming around on all fours? New mobility brings with it more expenditure of energy and calories, so weight gain might not be as great.
Is your baby just more interested in pulling things from drawers and playing hide-and-seek than in eating? The world is a fascinating place, and sitting in a high chair looking at strained carrots and mashed bananas might not be your baby's cup of tea. . . for now.
Are you introducing the right kinds of foods? As your baby's taste matures, you can begin to pay more attention to the texture and variety of foods she eats. If she's not interested in just baby foods anymore, how about introducing finger foods that are safe and fun? This might entice her to sit and eat what you would consider enough.
If none of these questions gets to the bottom of your baby's weight loss, or if you are concerned at any time about your baby's weight gain or growth, call your doctor. Don't forget that this may also be a time of adjustment for your baby. A large baby who genetically is scheduled to be average in size may start to slow down in growth about this time.
The flip side is the chubby baby. Plump may be the world's "ideal" kind of baby, but for a parent worried about obesity later, rapid weight gain can cause as much worry as weight loss. Never, ever withhold feedings from infants, or enforce a diet, but make sure your baby's calories are coming from healthy sources, not junk food. Try to encourage activity so your baby expends more energy and more calories. Check to make sure your baby isn't drinking too much juice or other high-calorie drinks. Again, if your baby's weight or growth rate have you worried, call your doctor.
