Sexual chemistry: In minds of men?
Call it ego, machismo or downright delusional behavior, but men are more likely than women to "oversexualize" conversations and incorrectly assume sexual interest, a new study says.
Researchers from the University of Connecticut and Elon University found that after a brief five-minute first meeting, men were more likely than women to infer a sexual chemistry.
"Men were more likely to perceive their partner as sexy and flirtatious, but that didn't at all correspond with how she saw him or she saw herself," said Maurice Levesque, co-author of the study.
The research was unclear as to why men were more likely than women to falsely perceive this sexual dynamic, but other research on the subject has suggested that men might be mislabeling friendliness, he said.
"Behavior that looks like she is engaged in the conversation, may actually be taken as signs of sexual interest, as opposed to what she intends, which is friendliness," he said.
"However, for some men, it may be that they don't even need those cues."
The fact that men appear to "oversexualize" more often than their female counterparts may provide the basis of future studies that address the roots of sexual harassment and date rape, Levesque said.
The study is published in the latest issue of Psychology of Women Quarterly.
