West Nile cases, robins linked
Michigan's beloved state bird, the robin, has an ugly double life: It's the preferred host of mosquitoes that transmit the potentially deadly West Nile virus and its migration may explain the timing of human outbreaks of the virus.
Researchers with the Consortium of Conservation Medicine, who published their findings this month in a British science journal, studied the feeding patterns of Culex mosquitoes.
When robins migrated in late summer and early fall, they found a sevenfold increase in the number of mosquitoes that shifted from nibbling on birds to humans, driving up the number of people infected with West Nile virus.
"It's just another piece of the puzzle," said Mark Hansell of the Oakland County Health Department.
The findings come as health officials in Michigan are bracing themselves for the latest human West Nile outbreak. A mosquito pool collected in Rochester last month tested positive for the virus, the first in the state this year, and experts say human cases likely aren't far behind.
"As the mercury rises and the rain stops, we tend to get a little more on edge," Hansell said.
Last year was one of the worst for Michigan, with 64 cases and four deaths.
