FDA warns about eating raw Wash. oysters

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday advised people not to eat raw oysters harvested in Washington state, citing bacterial illnesses that have sickened people on both coasts.

On Friday, the state Department of Health recalled all oysters in the shell harvested after July 13 from closed areas in two bodies of water near Seattle — Hood Canal and south Puget Sound. The recall did not affect packaged oysters.

More than 70 cases of vibriosis have been reported this year in people who ate oysters in Washington, the highest number since 1997, when 58 cases were reported, Health Department spokesman Tim Church said.

The agency has received reports of people from Oregon, British Columbia and as far away as New York being sickened after eating raw oysters from Washington, he said, though it was unclear whether those people ate the oysters in Washington or ate oysters shipped to them. There were also cases in California, the FDA said.

Vibriosis is caused by vibrio parahaemolyticus, a bacterium typically found in salt water that proliferates in hot weather.

In healthy adults, the bacterium can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, fever and chills. Deaths are rare, but the illness can kill those with chronic liver disease or compromised immune systems.

"It's a combination of warmer weather as well as low tides during warm parts of the day," Church said. "All of this contributes to the growth of this bacteria."

Diners can avoid illness by heating shellfish that have been stored cold to 145 degrees, health officials say.
