The Barnes Family
Who they are: Miriam, a semi-retired real-estate agent, and Glover, a University of Washington professor of microbiology, of Mount Baker, ages undisclosed ("we could draw Social Security if we wanted to"); sons Erik, 35, finishing his doctorate in music in Texas; Noel, 34; postal carrier. -- Child-rearing philosophy: "Give a child all the love and respect you can, a sense of worth, all the education they can absorb and shove them out of the nest," Miriam says. "Give them the opportunity to try as many things as possible. For example, when my son, who wanted be pianist, wanted to play football - I just gritted my teeth and thought, `Don't let anybody step on his hands'. . . Teach them honesty, integrity." -- Who has the power in the family: "It's always been a pretty democratic union," Miriam says. "It would depend on what the subject was. Things I would have final say on might be how to decorate a room, how to landscape the yard; he would have final say on where and when we take vacation."
Chores: "I have raised two boys to be the best husbands in the world," she says. "They are excellent cooks because frequently I'd get home late, and if they wanted to eat, they were going to have to learn to cook. They can clean house as well as anybody . . . I used to post extra, paying jobs - cutting the grass, washing the cars, painting the deck - on the bulletin board and (the boys) could bid on them . . . My husband does the kitchen floor and takes out the garbage." -- Biggest challenge: "When I was working, it was trying to find time to spend together, between our involvement in politics, civic obligations . . . Twice a year we try to get out of town so phones don't ring and nobody can reach us. We go to Ashland every year; sometimes to Mexico. We have season tickets to the opera and theater, so we know those evenings will be ours."
