Can a child catch chicken pox twice?

Chickenpox is a common and highly infectious disease caused by the Herpes varicella virus.

After an incubation period of 14 to 21 days the illness starts with fever and generally feeling unwell. Younger children may skip this stage and start with a rash. Older children and adults tend to be more unwell with high fever, flu like symptoms, headache, backache and sore throat, before the rash appears.

The rash typically starts as a crop of red patches which within hours become red lumps and then blisters. These crust over after three to four days.

In mild cases the whole illness may consist of just a few spots, usually crops of spots, blisters and crusting spots all at different stages appear in different parts of the body. The trunk is most commonly involved, also the face, upper arms and legs and scalp are often involved. Blisters can also involve the lining of the mouth and throat, eyes and genitals.

Immunity after chickenpox is usually lifelong and it is rare for second attacks to occur. However the virus tends to remain hidden or latent in the body - around the nerves coming out of the spine - and can recur in later life as shingles, also known as herpes zoster.

If your son's first attack when he was 18 months old fits the description given above, it is likely he had chickenpox then in which case he is now immune. His present rash of spots on his face is unlikely to be chickenpox.

It is more likely that his rash is due to another cause such as:

  • Impetigo - this is a bacterial skin infection. It is itchy and very infectious. It begins with small blisters which turn into areas of pus covered with very thin skin. These become red and raw and may weep, as they dry they produce yellow golden crusts.

They commonly occur on the face or around the mouth but can affect any part of the body as they are spread by scratching. Treatment is with an antibiotic cream which your GP can prescribe such as Fucidin or Bactroban. If the rash is widespread or not responding to cream then your son may need a course of antibiotics by mouth.

  • Eczema - this can cause itchy spots anywhere on the body, including the face. It usually gets better with a moisturising ointment but may need an antibiotic cream if it has become infected.

  • Flea bites - fleas can produce itchy red bumps on the skin, usually in clusters on the arms, shoulders, hands or bottom but they can occur on the face or trunk. Nearly always the fleas have jumped on the child form a cat, dog or other pet such as a rabbit or guinea pig.

Your son may be the only affected person in the house because although the rest of you nay have been bitten, he may be hypersensitive so his skin may react more to the bites.

If you suspect fleas take your pet(s) to the vet to be checked as they may need sprays or other flea treatment. Fleas do not live on humans so your son is not contagious. You can rub an antihistamine cream such as Anthisan on the spots to stop them itching.

Ask your GP to check your son's spots as he may be able to give you an idea of the cause and treat if necessary.

We recommend readers seek personal medical attention in appropriate circumstances.
