What is the best protection against dog fleas?
Some of the best treatments are those that are effective against the pre-adult stages of the most common fleas in the dog, Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides canis, but there are new products coming on to the market all the time.
Therefore, the best thing to do is to take your dog along to his vet, as some of the best flea preparations are prescription-only medicines and so can only be provided by the vet who is looking after the pet.
Your vet can also suggest a product that is most suitable for your dog.
However, to completely get rid of fleas is quite difficult, especially if there are a number of pets in the household and they have free access to the outside.
Effective flea control can only be achieved through the correct treatment of the pets as well as their indoor environment.
Treat the areas where your dog spends most of his time, including outhouses and sheds, but particularly where he sleeps.
Washing the bedding regularly in hot water will destroy any young fleas, but not the eggs, and vacuuming the carpet helps too.
Although treatments that have an effect on the life cycle are useful, remember that it is likely that new fleas are coming into the house all the time. Treat your dog and home all year round and hopefully things will get better!
Reassuringly, cat and dog fleas may bite people, but not live on them. It takes human fleas to do that!
However, from my own experience as a vet, some people appear to have a greater reaction to cat and dog flea bites.
I always have very itchy flea bites, whereas some of my colleagues don't seem to react at all! It may be worthwhile going along to see your GP if you develop any severe reaction to any flea bites.
Remember Elaine cannot replace the vet who normally looks after your pet and they should always be the first point of contact. If you are concerned your pet may be ill, don't delay contacting your own vet.
