Shingles usually affects elderly patients - it can occur in children and young adults but this is quite rare.
Shingles nearly always only happens if your son has already had chickenpox. The virus causing this (called the varicella-zoster virus) survives in a dormant form in the nerve roots near the spinal cord and brain.
After an interval of many years (but sometimes sooner as in your son's case) this virus can be reactivated. Such reactivation can be the result of him being generally run down, perhaps following a winter of typical childhood infections or influenza, or the result of him having poor immunity.
The virus then spreads along the nerve and ends up in the sensory nerve endings in the skin where it causes pain and a blistering rash which affects a specific patch of skin on one side of his body.
The rash follows the same route as the nerve involved so that it spreads in a line or band. Occasionally a few chickenpox blisters can appear in other parts of his body.
Your son may have felt pain in the same part of his body as the rash for a few days before the rash appeared. The rash starts as a cluster of red spots which soon turn into blisters.
The blisters are often larger than those of chickenpox and tend to join up. They heal by crusting and often leave behind a raw exposed area of skin. This skin can easily become infected or bleed if knocked.
The severe pain in the skin eases once the rash starts crusting over (usually within a week). However your son may feel intense itching, irritation or shooting pains for several weeks (and occasionally months) afterwards.
After several years his skin may turn white (vitiligo) or feel numb.
Fortunately, shingles tends to be a much milder illness in children than in adults and your son should make a quick recovery.
