Why does fruit make me bloated?

The symptoms you describe aren't that of an allergy as allergies cause symptoms such as itching, sneezing, swelling and rash rather than just bloating and stomach ache.

It is possible to be intolerant to fruit, especially if you eat one particular favourite, e.g. bananas or oranges very often.

This could potentially explain your bloating and stomach ache, but the fact you get the symptoms straight away and only when you eat three or four piece of fruit at once makes me think your stomach is simply sensitive to the onslaught of acid or fibre.

Some soft fruits, particularly melons, are also fermented very quickly in the gut which can make you feel very bloated.

My advice would be to spread your fruit consumption out over the day so that you never eat more than a couple of pieces at once, and to keep the consumption of highly fermentable soft fruit to between meals only as having then on an empty stomach can help to minimise symptoms.

Do nits live on dogs?

Lice are highly 'host specific', that is they will only live on one type of animal, and will not survive if transferred to a host of a different species.

Lice infestations are uncommon in dogs. There are two sub-orders of lice, the biting and the sucking types, and the biting types tend to be more irritating. The disease is most often seen in winter, as high skin temperatures kill lice.

In dogs, the irritation from the lice is usually seen around the body openings and the ear tips. There are often areas of matted hair. The affected dog may not be itchy at all and simply have a scaly skin.

However, sensitive animals can have small areas of irritation that the dog makes worse through scratching. Lice infections are most often seen in younger dogs where there is poor hygiene, poor nutrition and overcrowding. In older dogs it is usually seen with some other debilitating disease.

Lice infections can be confused with mite infestations, typically Cheyletiella and Sarcoptes, flea infestations and allergies.

Cheyletiella is called 'walking dandruff' as the mites cause an excessive amount of skin scale and can just be seen by the naked eye; they are about 0.5 mm long. An infection does not cause any great loss of hair, but often mites will move onto the hands of humans handling an affected patient. Although they do not live on humans, they will often bite and cause small raised spots in the affected area.

Sarcoptes mites can affect the whole of the dog's body, but usually start off in the ear tips and face. The affected areas become thickened, inflamed and very itchy. This is due partly to the mite itself, but mainly through the self-trauma (rubbing and scratching) caused by the affected dog. Sarcoptes can be transmitted to humans, but the lesions are small and self-limiting. A separate type of Sarcoptes causes scabies in humans.

The most common skin problem is fleabite hypersensitivity. The dog reacts to one of the 15 protein fractions in the flea's saliva that is injected into the skin when the flea is feeding.

This reaction is the cause of most of the itching with a flea infestation, causing nibbling and self-trauma leading to a hot spot. This is seen in dogs most commonly around the rump area.

To see if your dog has got fleas you can comb your dog's hair, and transfer any black spots onto a piece of tissue paper. Add a drop of water, and if there is a reddish stain, it will show that this is the excreted blood product. If the black spots are actually in the skin rather than on it, then this could be any one of a number of skin infections.

It may also be that the nits you see in your dog's hair are flea eggs or larvae.

Dogs develop allergies because of various causes. There can be a reaction to a drug or insect bite or sting. They can develop 'atopic dermatitis', caused by an allergic reaction to something in the environment. The most common allergens include house dust, house dust mites, fungi and pollens.

The allergy may be food hypersensitivity, where the dog is allergic to a particular food, such as beef, milk, eggs or fish. Contact dermatitis is where items such as soaps, detergents, shampoos, topical drugs, plastic, rubber nylon and other synthetic agents cause the allergic response.

As you can see from this quite complicated list of causes of skin irritation, it is important to get your dog checked out by your vet. They will be able to give you advice and prescribe any treatments they feel are appropriate for your dog's condition.

How can I cure heat rash?

It sounds as if your skin is photo-sensitive, which means in effect, that you allergic to sunshine - or more accurately, the ultraviolet light in sunshine. Photosensitivity can be caused by drugs, including some antibiotics and also, perhaps more importantly, the oral contraceptive pill. Did you start taking it when you were 17?

It can also be caused by some skin creams, perfumes and cosmetics. But in some people, it occurs for no apparent reason. Because the rash is caused by an allergic reaction, anti-histamine tablets can be helpful, and it's worth trying different brands, to see if one works better than others.

But the only real answer is to try and keep your skin out of the sun, or, if it is going to be exposed, wear a factor 25 sunblock, which also has 4* UVA protection. Remember sunlight can get through lightweight clothing, so if you are only wearing say, a fine linen blouse, wear sunblock underneath.

If a rash does break out, then steroid creams can be helpful, or, if the rash and itching are severe, sometimes steroid tablets are required. Severe cases of photosensitivity can sometimes be eased by controlled exposure to UV light, which gradually de-sensitizes the skin. Ask your GP if you can be referred to a specialist.

But there is one bit of good news for people with sun sensitive skin - they get far less sun damage and wrinkles than everyone else!
