How can I control my Candida levels?

Thrush is characterised by vaginal itching and often a white discharge, and is a sign of candida overgrowth in this part of the body.

The main home of candida in the body is actually the digestive tract, which could also explain your bowel problems.

Most of the information on the problems the yeast causes and how to tackle them is speculative and based on anecdotal evidence, but thrush does definitely seem to thrive on a diet high in sugar and fast-releasing (highly refined) carbohydrates such as white bread, cakes, biscuits and pastries.

Other foods that seem to encourage candida growth are yeasty, mouldy or fermented foods such as bread, yeast extract, stock cubes and gravy mixes, soy sauce, vinegar, cheese, peanuts and mushrooms.

I would suggest you try eliminating these foods from your diet for two months whilst eating more vegetables and fruit, fresh meat and fish, beans and pulses, brown rice and water. Avoid fruit juices as they are too high in sugar, and alcohol.

To help restore a healthy balance of organism in your gut, it's worth taking a probiotic supplement.

In one study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, a threefold decrease in thrush infections was seen when patients consumed yoghurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus every day for six months.

If you feel better after a couple of months, you may be able to eat small amounts of bread and drink fruit juices and the occasional alcoholic drink.

But keeping your diet as low sugar and unprocessed as possible is something you should carry on for the long term.
