Can colonic irrigation help irritable bowel syndrome?
You have two different and unrelated problems. First, your recurring thrush. Are you sure it's thrush? Not all genital itching is due to thrush - other infections, and also allergies can be to blame, and using thrush treatments won't help these (and can make matters worse).
The only way to be sure you have thrush is to have a swab done when you have symptoms. If it is thrush, then treatment with either fluconazole, or a long course of nystatin pessaries will usually eventually be effective. Both of these are available on prescription from your GP (and certainly with fluconazole it's cheaper this way than buying it from the chemist).
Next, your irritable bowel syndrome. Waste matter is usually moved along the bowel by contractions of the muscles that are inside the bowel wall, as these occur in a co-ordinated fashion, so that first one segment contracts, then the next, then the next, and so on.
In IBS, the co-ordination isn't so good - one segment can go into spasm (causing cramp-like pain) while another relaxes too much - causing bloating. The underlying cause is often a mystery, but certain foods can be to blame.
Onions, leeks, cauliflower and broccoli are common culprits in some people, while other find that spices, or a lot of wheat can upset their tummy. Keeping a food dairy can help identify problem foods - though often it's only a large quantity that is upsetting - for instance some people find they cannot eat a bowl of French onion soup (which contains a lot of onion) but bolognaise sauce (which only contains a small amount of onion) is OK.
Drugs that ease spasm of the bowel wall, such as mebeverine, can be helpful, but you may find you need to take it for at least two weeks before you notice any difference. In my opinion, colonic irrigation is just a fancy name for an enema, and whilst it may be helpful if you are constipated, washing out the contents of the bowel is not a long-term answer to dealing with IBS.
Stress does seem to make IBS worse, and tackling anxiety or tiredness - with counselling, a little more exercise and a few early nights, really can be an effective way of calming an unpredictable tummy.
