Drugs are developed to treat specific diseases yet they can be surprisingly effective at treating other conditions as well.

Following the news that the skin condition psoriasis has been successfully treated by an arthritis drug, we take a look at more drugs with unforeseen benefits:

One: Arthritis drug and psoriasis

A drug developed for arthritis sufferers can effectively treat psoriasis, researchers have found.

In a trial over half of patients with the disfiguring skin disease were almost entirely free of symptoms after 10 weeks.

A quarter of the patients taking the drug achieved complete clearing of the skin.

Psoriasis is a chronic condition caused by proliferating skin cells which produce unsightly red scales that may itch and bleed.

Two: Epilepsy drug and migraines

A drug used to treat epilepsy is now providing welcome relief to migraine sufferers - stopping migraines before they start.

Neurologists believe the treatment is effective because there appears to be a link between the chemical pathways of the brain involved in both conditions.

Three: Aspirin and heart attacks

Aspirin is a common pain-reliever. However a team of doctors has claimed it should be taken every day by all over-50s to ward off heart attacks and strokes.

Aspirin lowers high blood pressure and the scientists believe the drug could prevent a quarter of heart attacks - saving tens of thousands of lives each year.

However evidence has emerged that those over 75 who are not at risk of a heart attack might be harmed by daily aspirin use.

Aspirin can cause stomach bleeding and other side effects in some patients.

Four: Ibuprofen and breast cancer

Women who take over-the-counter painkillers can halve their risk of breast cancer, say doctors.

An extensive UK study of 80,000 women found those taking two or more ibuprofen tablets a week reduced their chances of developing the disease by 50 per cent.

Five: Diabetes drug and IVF

A common diabetes drug could double the chance of women conceiving with IVF, researchers have found.

A hormonal disturbance called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the main causes of female infertility.

Doctors from Leeds told a European fertility conference that metaformin can double the chance of conceiving for these women.

Six: Hallucinogenic and alcoholism

A hallucinogenic drug used by hippies in the sixties could hold the key to beating alcoholism, researchers claim.

Ibogaine, derived from a West African shrub, was found to reduce binge-drinking tendencies in alcohol-dependent mice and the scientists believe the effect could be mirrored in humans.

The drug works by increasing the production of a protein in the brain, which alters addictive cravings.

Seven: Transplant drug and Huntington's

Scientists have found a drug that appears to slow the debilitating condition of Huntington's Disease.

The disease currently has no cure, however animal tests by Cambridge University found that rapamycin delayed the onset of the disease.

It worked by speeding up the break-down of the toxic protein in cells which causes Huntington's.

The drug is already used in humans to prevent organ rejection after transplants.

Here's what readers have had to say so far.

Low blood pressure, insomnia caused by 'restless leg syndrome, and palpitations. More salt helped to cure these things to a large degree.

- Angela Snell, Labastide, Murat, France

I have recently had 2 infusions of Remicade for Crohn's disease. I am due to have my 3rd in 2 weeks.

It has worked wonders on my Crohn's, and has in fact cleared up my base metal (nickel) allergy completely. No more unsightly itchy patches.

Until I read the article yesterday I hadn't associated the two! Here's to more tests with this drug, and many more.

- Kirsty Southwell, Coventry, England, UK

Maybe NICE could collect anecdotal evidence from people with multiple health conditions and see if any of their treatments help symptoms of other non treated problems that they have.
