Smokers buying fewer cigarettes but spending more

Smokers are buying fewer packs of cigarettes but rising taxes mean they are spending more on the habit, research shows today.

Some 68 billion individual "sticks" will be bought this year - down from 79 billion five years ago, according to market analysts Mintel. Tax-free cigarettes bought either duty-free or on the black market account for around 28% of this year's figure.

Despite buying fewer packs, smokers will spend nearly £13 billion on duty-paid cigarettes this year - up 13% on 2001, Mintel said.

The amount spent on untaxed cigarettes in duty-free shops or on the black market is unknown. Meanwhile smokers keen to quit the habit have boosted sales of nicotine replacement therapy by nearly 50% over the past five years to around £97 million.

That figure is set to smash the £100 million barrier by the end of next year, Mintel predicts. Patches and gum make up around 87% of this market, with the rest made up of tablets, lozenges and inhalators.

Nicotine replacement patches are the single most popular product in this category, currently used by around 28% of smokers who are trying to quit. Nearly one half (47%) of smokers have tried to kick the habit during the past year, according to Mintel's Cigarettes and Smoking Cessation Aids report.

Younger people are most likely to smoke, with 36% of people aged 25 to 34 doing so.

This drops to 26% for the adult population as a whole and to just under 15% among the over-65s.

Mintel senior market analyst Matt King said Britons still spend £130 on cigarettes for every £1 spent on nicotine replacement therapy - despite the forthcoming ban on smoking in public places.

"Although the impact of the ban on the cigarette market may not be an insurmountable problem for the cigarette manufacturers, sales of smoking cessation aids are certainly likely to benefit," he said.

"Manufacturers are expecting to see a boom in sales in advance of the ban, with many smokers potentially looking to give up voluntarily before they are forced to restrict their consumption."

Smokers under the age of 34 are the most likely to attempt kicking the habit, with people aged 65 and over the least likely to try quitting.
