Relax, you're in good hands

Panchakarma, a classical Indian therapies, is said to boost the immune system and rid the body of toxins. TV presenter Wendy Turner gave it a try. She says:

'After aromatherapy treatments, I often feel frustrated as they seem rather light. So when I was told to expect the massage of my life with panchakarma - I was willing.

'It claims to have enormous benefits for disorders affecting the central nervous system, immune system, and for stress-related conditions.

 

'At the Kailash Centre, I was greeted by my therapist, Mauroof Athique, who led me into a room with an oriental feel - Asian plants, bamboo furniture, and original Tibetan prints. She told me panchakarma would detox and revitalise me and left me to undress and lie face down under a blanket, on a treatment bed.

'The therapy began with a scalp massage called shirodhara. An unfragranced herbal oil was dripped on to my forehead - the third eye - from a round pot with a small hole in the base, while my head was massaged.

'This first stage took around 12 minutes and the sensation was powerful sensual and strong. I immediately began to relax.

'The next part of the treatment, called shehana, involves virtually every inch of the body. The same oil is used, and it felt warm and soothing.

'The therapist's pressure was what I would have expected 'deep-tissue kneading' to feel like, and the sensation of the oil and strong hands was particularly intoxicating. My back had been tense and this made the muscles relax immediately. The bliss lasted about an hour and 40 minutes.

'Hot herbal poultices were placed all over my body for a few seconds at a time. Mrs Athique used about four large poultices and removed each as soon as it cooled, then warmed them again to hot flannel temperature. This helps draw toxins to the skin's surface.

'At last I could relax for five minutes, and a warm blanket was placed over me. I drifted in and out of a light sleep.

'Then I was led to a steam cabinet in an adjoining room and sat in it with my head sticking out for about eight minutes. I could almost feel the toxins oozing out, but I did start feeling uncomfortable and was relieved to be let out.

'Finally, wrapped in a bathrobe, I was given two large glasses of warm water and told to relax before getting dressed. That night I went into a really deep sleep, but when I woke up I felt completely energised. My skin felt supple and smooth.

This treatment exceeded my expectations, and I would definitely recommend it as a de-stressing, relaxing and energising therapy.'
