If you have tried to prevent thread veins but they are still appearing, there are some techniques to treat them.
Topical or applied treatments
Alternative health experts recommend massaging essential oils into the area affected by thread veins.
Rosemary is known to boost circulation and strengthen the capillaries, while rose oil is renowned for calming and soothing the skin.
As obesity is a factor in causing thread veins, losing weight could cut the risk of them developing.
If you are obese, losing weight will have many more health benefits than simply reducing the appearance of thread veins. Talk to your doctor about slimming if you are suffering from obesity.
There are several beauty products on the market that all claim to reduce facial 'redness' and thread veins.
The latest - recommended by Julia Carling, femail.co.uk's beauty expert - is called Vein Away and users claim it can improve the appearance of thread veins in three weeks.
The ingredients are a secret but Julia says the cream contains soothing Aloe Vera and Vitamin K. Vein Away is available by mail order on 0800 9759980.
Surgery
The two methods of surgery most commonly used for thread veins use lasers or a treatment called sclerotherapy.
Lasers are normally used to treat thread veins on the face as they are smaller than those in the legs. There are a variety of different lasers - pulsed dye laser, YAG laser, diode laser, alexandrite laser - but they all work on the veins in a similar way.
The laser fires a wavelength of light at the veins, which causes them to shut down and disintegrate. The treatment lasts roughly 20 minutes and you will need between one and two sessions to get rid of the veins.
For thread veins on the legs, sclerotherapy is more suitable as lasers may not be able to reach the deeper and bigger thread veins.
A tiny needle is used to inject a saline solution, called a sclerosant, into the vein. This irritates the lining of the vein making it grow, eventually blocking the vein altogether. This stops the blood getting through so the vein eventually withers and dies.
Sclerotherapy also takes about 20 minutes to perform, but you might need two to three sessions to clear up the veins depending on how severe the condition is.
After the treatment you might be left with a dark area that looks like a bruise but this will fade like an ordinary bruise.
Are there any side effects?
After having laser therapy on the face, your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight. Your dermatologist should provide you with factor 60 or above sun cream to protect your skin after treatment.
The amount of time you need to be careful in the sun depends on how much laser therapy you have had so check with your dermatologist how long you should take precautions.
Sclerotherapy only has one possible side effect, although this is very rare. 'Approximately 0.2 to 1 per cent of patients may develop an ulcer where the sclerosant was injected,' says Vichy dermatologist Dr Rachael Morris-Jones.
Very large thread veins in the leg may also need laser therapy after the sclerotherapy to 'tidy' them up.
Where can I get treatment?
Because both treatments are termed 'cosmetic' it is difficult to get them on the NHS. You will only be able to do so if you can show the thread veins are detrimental to your health, if you are getting depressed about them for example.
Make an appointment to see your doctor to discuss the possibility of having thread veins treated on the NHS.
To have the veins treated privately, make sure the person treating you is a medically qualified doctor, plastic surgeon or dermatologist as anyone who passes a local authority hygiene inspection can operate a laser - so check their qualifications!
