Light that leaves you beaming
The latest weapon in the fight against Seasonal Affective Disorder could also help those who simply feel under the weather in winter.
Light boxes, which emit a bright artificial light, are being installed on office desks across Europe as companies try to beat the winter blues.
Seasonal affective disorder is a serious form of depression linked to lack of sunlight which affects about one in ten of us. They develop symptoms over the winter months, improving during spring and summer.
According to Professor Chris Thompson, from Southampton University's psychiatry department, many people develop a milder version of the condition each winter. Yet two hours' exposure to bright light every day could help 90 per cent of those affected, he said.
'It is not just a tightly defined group of SAD sufferers that can be helped. About 30 per cent of the population suffers from one or more symptoms of SAD during winter and they can benefit from light therapy,' he said.
'Lack of energy, irritability, difficulty in getting up in the morning, wanting to go to bed early and cravings for carbohydrate are all part of the syndrome.' Although exposure to sunlight has long been regarded as a treatment for SAD, Professor Thompson has found that the brighter the light, the better.
His analysis of research studies from the past 15 years found that SAD sufferers were three times more likely to get better after exposure to bright light than less powerful beams. A 'light bath' was twice as likely to be effective during the morning, he added.
Light boxes, such as the Bright Light launched in Britain by Philips yesterday, can cost up to £190. In Finland, people go to Bright Light cafes, where they can soak up the rays while having breakfast.
The SAD Association welcomed the development as making light therapy more accessible. A spokesman said: 'It helps those with a milder form of seasonal depression and not just those who have had a diagnosis.'
