Go-ahead for new HIV treatment

Pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline has got the go-ahead to market its HIV treatment Trizivir in EU member countries.

The medicine is the first of its kind to combine the anti-HIV therapies abacavir sulphate, lamivudine and zidovudine in one tablet.

GlaxoSmithKline believes the simplification of the dosage - only one tablet twice daily is required - will improve a patient's adherence to treatment, one of the key challenges in tackling HIV infection.

Last month, Trizivir won approval in a number of countries, including the US, Mexico and Switzerland, but today received clearance from the European Commission.

It means the drug will now be available in 15 European countries. The approval is an early boost for UK-based GlaxoSmithKline, which formed after the merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham on December 27.

Glaxo Wellcome had been involved in the development of Trizivir for at least five years.

A spokesman for GlaxoSmithKline said: 'This is good news for patients with HIV. The new combination of therapies offers a new option in the treatment of Aids and HIV.

'One of the biggest problems surrounding the treatment of HIV involves the number of tablets patients have to take. This reduces that significantly.'
