How can I beat spots in the summer?
One common underlying features in acne is the over-production of sebum - the natural skin water-proofing agent.
In some individuals, sunlight seems to increase sebum production, which can worsen spots and acne.
Certain dietary approaches seem to help control sebum production and may therefore help your symptoms in the long term.
It is often said that a high fat diet increases the risk of acne. Recent evidence suggests, however, that the real culprits may be carbohydrates in the diet.
Studies show that acne is rare or nonexistent in people living in non-industrialised cultures but tends to appear when they transition to a Western way of life.
Carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as confectionery, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes stimulate insulin production, and this is thought to boost the levels of other hormones (such as testosterone) that can cause excess oil production in the skin.
If you eat a lot of sugar or refined starched such as white bread, white rice and pasta, then cutting down on these may help in the long term. I suggest you base your diet on fish, lean meat, vegetables and beans and pulses.
Certain nutrients may be useful in controlling acne. The mineral zinc has been found to help acne sufferers. One study found that zinc therapy worked as well as antibiotic medication.
I generally recommend acne sufferers take 30 mg of zinc, three times a day for three to four months, after which the dose can be reduced to once or twice daily.
Studies do show that zinc therapy takes time to work, with 12 weeks being the amount of time most people seem to need to get good results.
My preference is to use a form of zinc which is readily absorbed by the body such as zinc citrate or zinc picolinate.
Because zinc can induce copper deficiency, 1 mg of copper should be taken for every 15 mg of supplemental zinc.
If your spots tend to get worse before your period, I recommend taking 50 mg of vitamin B6 each day. This vitamin seems to help this particular type of acne.
