Until recently, you would have been advised to rest completely if you had a sudden bout of agonising back pain. Now research has found that this approach doesn't work, and could delay your recovery.
'By keeping active and getting on with your daily activities as normally as possible, you will recover faster,' says Gordon Waddell, a professor who helped redraft the Royal College of General Practitioners' guidelines on back care.
But researchers at the University of Florida have taken the exercise idea one step further. Convinced that many chronic back problems can be attributed to weak back muscles, they have developed a range of machines to test, and then work at, muscle strength. A study of more than 600 people who used these MedX machines found that 76 pc of the patients had reduced lower back pain, with most of them maintaining this improvement up to a year later
A Swiss-based company, Kieser Training, has just opened the first MedX facility in the UK. The machines are operated by specially trained staff, although a doctor makes the initial assessment of muscle strength and then decides on a course of treatment (involving any of the five MedX therapy machines), as well as monitoring progress.
To the layman, MedX machines look essentially like conventional exercise equipment. However, to ensure that the deep muscles of the spine receive the full benefit, the pelvis is immobilised (this apparently prevents the gluteal and leg muscles from taking over). Just two minutes are spent at each therapy machine, followed by a workout programme on the general exercise machines.
Not everyone is convinced that MedX machines are the answer for back problems. 'The jury is out on just how helpful strengthening exercises are,' says Professor Croft, a back pain specialist at Keele University medical institute. 'There is no clear evidence that doing specific back exercises will help you recover any more quickly,' he says. 'However, it is also fair to say that for some people, that form of exercise will be a very positive way of keeping the back mobile.'
