Could a walk cure insomnia?

People with insomnia may be able to get a good night's sleep by simply exposing themselves to 15 minutes of daylight in the morning, say scientists.

They believe sleep-related problems are connected to a disruption of the body clock, so light therapy could help.

Dr Stephany Biello of the University of Glasgow says that difficulty in sleeping is one of the main reasons why over-65s visit their doctor. Just going outside for an early morning walk could be beneficial,' she says.

'A short exposure seems to be sufficient. Even on a dull winter's day, the intensity of the light outside is enough.' A disruption to the body clock is seen as a natural part of the ageing process.

'The key is a part of the brain called the superchiasmatic nucleus, which responds to light signals,' says Dr Biello. 'It's the internal, daily pacemaker. What tends to happen as we get older is that we wake earlier and nap during the day so our sleep cycle becomes fragmented.'

Dr Biello tested the potential of light therapy on hamsters. She found that normal sleep could be restored simply by increasing light levels at the beginning of the day.

While levels indoors are often as low as 100 lux - a measurement of light intensity - daylight is in the thousands. 'In evolutionary terms, we were not designed as a species to spend all our time indoors,' says Dr Biello.

'But many older people spend much of their time inside. Just getting outside for some light could help sleeping patterns.' Light therapy could also benefit those whose body clocks are thrown out of synch by shift working or air travel.
