When Dawn Spindler developed bunions on her feet in her mid-teens she thought they were just a minor irritation.
She was wrong. In fact the problem was making her walk on the sides of her feet - causing her pelvis to tilt forward and her spine to curve.
'I was suffering from lower back pain and ended up walking around like a hunchback,' says Dawn.
After visiting a podiatrist Dawn discovered that her back pain was actually due to her feet.
'I realised how problems with my feet were affecting my overall posture,' says Dawn.
The podiatrist prescribed orthotics - plastercast moulds for Dawn's shoes - which raised her feet and pushed her hips and knees into position.
'Seeing a podiatrist revealed that feet are often the root problem for back complaints. The improvement to my back has been 97-98 per cent better. Seeing a podiatrist has given me a new lease of life.'
Here we look at orthotics and two other foot therapies
Orthotic therapy
Orthotic therapy is the use of special shoe inserts which help the feet to function more efficiently. Orthotics may be prescribed for a number of foot problems. This could include claw feet - when a person walks heavily on the ball of your foot and heel putting pressure on the tendons. Alternatively, orthotics could help flat feet, where the heel turns inwards due to curvature of the spine.
To make an orthotic, a podiatrist will take a plastercast of your feet and make a mould to fit into your footwear.
Many orthotics are angled individually to control the heel and forefoot to prevent overloading of pressure.
Reflexology
Reflexology, the ancient art of healing which dates back to 2000 BC, originated from China and Egypt. It is used to treat a wide range of complaints from allergies and migraines to stress and digestive problems.
Contrary to popular thought, rather than diagnosing particular illnesses, reflexology identifies parts of the body that are suffering from health problems.
Practitioners claim the soles of the feet are like a mini map of the inside of the body and are linked to our inner organs.
Nicola Hall of the British Reflexology Association, says: 'Each part of the feet corresponds to different parts of the body: the toes to the head, pad of the foot to the lungs and heel to the pelvis.
If a part of the toe is tender or sensitive, this could indicate a mild degree of imbalance. Through regular reflexology, the tenderness will improve.
By pressing different reflexes - pressure points - on the feet, therapists claim they can unblock energy pathways in the body using their thumbs and so help the body to regain its natural balance and heal itself.
Podiatric biomechanics
Podiatric biomechanics, a technique popular in America, is designed to identify and treat foot and lower limb problems such as arched feet, tired feet, heel and knee pain.
A biomechanical examination involves taking a series of measurements of the feet and legs with the patient standing and lying down. It may include checking joint movements and assessing muscle strength and flexibility.
A practitioner may choose to use video analysis to examine the way a patient walks. The results of a biomechanical examination will enable the podiatrist to assess the position of the feet and provide corrective treatment - often recommending orthotics.

Contact The British Reflexology Association for a list of reflexologists (£2). A one hour reflexology session costs from around £20-40.
