Thumbs up for period pain cure

Applying pressure to a special point on the ankle could provide a cost-free and easy-to-learn treatment for period pain, research revealed today.

Millions of women in the UK suffer from painful cramps during their periods, with surveys finding that at least 50% say the pain can seriously disrupt their lives and many resorting to painkillers.

Researchers in Taiwan have now tested the effectiveness of a simple acupressure technique on a group of 69 college students to see if pain could be controlled without the use of medication.

Half of the women were taught to apply pressure to a part of the ankle known as the Sanyinjiao point, while the others did not receive the treatment.

The technique involved applying the thumb to the point for six seconds and then releasing it for two seconds. It was carried out on each ankle for five minutes and then repeated, in total taking 20 minutes to perform.

Huge success

The researchers, writing in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, found that 87% of the women who used the technique said it was helpful.

And 94% said they were satisfied with acupressure in terms of providing pain relief and psychological support during their period.

The researchers concluded that acupressure using the Sanyinjiao point was "an effective and safe form of therapy" for treating period pain.

They said it was cost-free and easy-to-learn, meaning it could be integrated into clinical practice to improve the quality of life of sufferers, especially adolescents.

Researcher Chung-Hey Chen, from Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan, said: "Acupressure is an effective, safe and easy-to-learn therapy for women with period pain.

"We found that applying acupressure during the initial treatment and then during self treatment significantly lowered the amount of pain experienced by the students.

"This is because acupressure invigorates blood circulation and vital energy, which in turn relieves cramping in the uterus.

"Acupressure is one of the best examples of an attempt to bring together Eastern and Western theories of medicine.

"It works by stimulating acupoints using pressure from the hands, fingers or thumbs."
