New treatment could stop spread of cancer

Scientists have claimed that new research could lead to the development of medication to halt the spread of cancer in the human body.

Work conducted at Copenhagen University to block a specific enzyme has raised the prospect of creating treatments which could contain the disease and reduce the amount of chemotherapy required by a patient.

Details of the research, published in the International Journal of Cancer, revealed that the spread of cancer was blocked in six out of seven laboratory mice.

The rodents were bred without a urokinase plasminogen activator (UPA), a type of enzyme which helps cancers to spread.

Researchers will now continue tests on mice and hope to develop a drug which can "block" the enzyme.

Dr Morten Johnsen, of the university, said: "What is special about the enzyme UPA is that the cancer needs the enzyme in order to function normally.

"This means that we should be able to block the enzyme and thereby check the spread of cancer without causing the strong side-effects for the patients that we see with other forms of therapy today."

A spokeswoman for Cancer Research UK said: "It is true that death from cancer is largely a result of the cancer spreading from the original site to other parts of the body.

"Any therapy that prevented this spread would be a major step forward in the treatment of cancer."

However, she warned that people should remain cautious about the potential benefits to patients of the research.
