Autogenics

Treatment: Autogenics is a relaxation technique which aims to focus concentration and release muscle tension and stress. It is related to self-hypnosis and meditation in that it trains people to use the mind to control the body. The therapy relies on mastering six basic exercises which are practised two or three times a day.

How often: Eight to ten-week courses with sessions lasting between an hour and 90 minutes that can be taught individually or in groups. The therapy can also be self-taught.

Best for: Helping to alleviate stress-related disorders, including insomnia and anxiety, pre-menstrual tension and menopausal difficulties. Addictions such as smoking are also believed to benefit.

How much: Prices vary greatly in Britain. London practices can charge between £80 or £90 an hour and £200 a head for a group course, which can drop to £80 per person elsewhere.

Availability: There are a number of private practices in the UK and some therapists operate from health clinics. More widely available in London.
