Hormone could prevent premature births

Premature births could be prevented by a hormone therapy for pregnant women, researchers have claimed.

Treating women with the female hormone progesterone could reduce their chances of giving birth too soon, recent research has suggested.

Now a new study will attempt to find out in far more detail why labour starts early and how progesterone could prevent this happening.

The Action Medical Research charity is giving a team of scientists in Glasgow £94,000 to carry out the research.

Prof Jane Norman, who will lead the project, said: "We're going to be studying mothers at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the increase in knowledge that this will give us could help in developing new therapies to save lives.

"In normal labour, white blood cells are activated in the bloodstream and migrate to the womb during the birthing process.

Sometimes this can happen too soon and we believe that these cells might play a key role in triggering pre-term labour.

"If this is the case then progesterone could stop this from happening by blocking the activation of white blood cells."

Progesterone is made in the ovaries and produced by the placenta in large quantities during pregnancy, she added.

Andrew Proctor, from Action Medical Research, said: "Doctors tell us they are close to cures for prematurity but their only barrier is funding. So our supporters are doing everything they can to raise money to help them." About 50,000 babies are born too soon every year in Britain, and can die or suffer life-long difficulties such as blindness, deafness and cerebral palsy. But, until now, little has been known about why some women go into labour early.
