Mothers 'let down by depression care'

Mothers who suffer depression during and after their child's birth are being failed by mental health services. The majority are given drugs instead of offered counselling, a leading charity has found.

At least one in six women experience mental distress during pregnancy or after birth and 25 per cent of all maternal deaths are due to psychiatric causes.

Depression symptoms include constant tiredness, sleeping problems, lack of interest in your baby, feeling lonely or overwhelmed and tension headaches.

Have you felt let down by depression treatment? Tell us in reader comments below

The survey by the mental health charity Mind, found over two thirds of mothers suffering from depression said they waited a month or more for any form of treatment. A shocking one in 10 had to wait over a year.

Nine out of 10 of those questioned said they felt healthcare professionals showed a lack of understanding or gave poor advice.

"I didn't want to admit I wasn't the 'supermum' I hoped I'd be and I felt ashamed I couldn't cope. But if someone had given me the chance, I'd have poured my heart out. I wish I'd had that opportunity," Kelly, 32, told Mind.

Even when they were treated, three quarters of mothers were given medication while less than 20 per cent were offered cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

This is despite a recent Canadian study which found that pregnant women who took anti-depressants such as Prozac, were more likely to give birth to stillborn, premature and low birth weight babies.

Shortage of special units

The survey of 148 women also found 63 per cent of mothers admitted to hospital were put on general psychiatric wards instead of specialist mother and baby units.

Mind's chief Executive, Paul Farmer, said: "Emotional and mental distress can be devastating for mothers and their families.

It's shocking how many women are being diagnosed incorrectly or not at all, put on waiting lists for treatment or told that services are not available in their area."

The Government is now launching two pilot studies to encourage the use of talking therapies such as CBT over taking medication.

Here's what readers have had to say so far.

I think there is an easy answer - fish oils. During pregnancy babies utilise their mothers pool of essential fatty acids to develop. By the end of the prgnancy the Mother will be drained unless her nutrition intake is good during and after. Fish Oils given to women with post natal depression have been proven to work and are much safer than Prozac!

My sister suffered depression before and after the baby. She recieved very little support and very poor advice. More should be done to deal with this increasing problem among young people.

- Mrs J Kamose, Birmingham, West Midlands

There is never going to be an easy answer to this sort of thing. It's not like treating an obvious physical injury.
