Machine that erases the pain of rheumatoid arthritis
Thousands of rheumatoid arthritis sufferers who have endured pain and misery for years are being offered hope with a new treatment.
The therapy, which involves filtering from the blood those harmful antibodies that attack the joints, is the first of its kind and could revolutionise patients' lives. Rather than taking drugs, their blood would be filtered every few months through a system resembling a drip or dialysis machine.
Initial trials proved so good that tests have been stopped to allow others to benefit. More than half those who took part reported significant improvements in conditions which had not responded to conventional drugs.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic debilitating disease in which the body's immune system attacks its own tissue It is more common in middle age, but the majority of sufferers - almost seven out of ten - are women aged 25 to 70.
Popular treatments include anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic drugs, steroid therapy and physiotherapy, as well as homeopathic supplements such as evening primrose oil, magnesium and zinc.
But the new therapy developed by Cypress Bioscience tackles the problem directly, targeting and removing antibodies that damage the body's own tissue. It offers hope to the estimated one in ten who don't respond to any of the drug therapies on the market. 'Drugs are no longer the only option for rheumatoid arthritis patients,' says Dr Jay Kranzier, chief executive of Cypress Bioscience.
