Grow your own life support
Pioneering new surgery using leg muscle to strengthen ailing hearts could benefit thousands of patients.
Doctors are taking cells from the leg or arm muscles of patients, growing them in a test tube and then injecting them into the damaged area of the heart, where they continue to grow and give new strength to the organ.
Once implanted, the cells - the same ones that make arm muscles grow in weightlifters - develop into mini-muscles and boost the operation of the heart. They improve the health and life expectancy of patients diagnosed with heart failure, a condition suffered by more than 500,000 people in Britain.
British hospitals are to take part in an international clinical trial of the new therapy, and around 300 men and women in the UK, France and America are being recruited for a trial, with the first operation scheduled in the next few weeks.
Most existing treatments for heart failure are drug-based and in many cases have a limited effect. The new therapy uses a completely different approach.
The cells taken from the leg are so-called satellite cells, immature cells that are capable of growing into adult muscle under the right circumstances.
'When someone takes up weightlifting, for example, these satellite cells are recruited and develop into fully functioning muscle. In effect the weightlifter is growing his or her own muscle,' says Dr Ralph Kelly, clinical research chief at Genzyme Biosurgery, the international biotech company that has developed the technology.
These so-called spare-part cells are found in most skeletal muscle, but not in heart muscle. So when parts of the heart muscle die because of disease or a heart attack, there are no cells like these to revitalise it.
In the new therapy, after the cells are taken from the leg they are allowed to grow in a solution and the resulting opaque paste is injected into the affected areas of heart.
First results on a handful of patients show that the therapy is safe and that it improves the functioning of the heart. Images shows the living leg muscle moving through the heart and colonising the damaged parts.
The first operation in the trial is expected to be carried out in France. Recruiting for the UK trials will start soon.
