High-pitched sound is being used to relieve the pain of tennis elbow.
A ten-minute session using a device that sends four blasts of sound into the elbow every second can be enough to get rid of the pain.
Doctors say it will have the same effect on tendons almost anywhere in the body, including the shoulder, hip, ankle and foot.
Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, most often affects people aged over 35 - though few people get it as a result of playing tennis.
For most people, the cause is a strain, overuse or a direct knock, as a result of which the outer part of the elbow becomes swollen, painful and tender to the touch.
The pain is caused by little breaks in the tissue that holds the muscles to the bone. These pull the hand backwards, and diagnosis is usually based on tenderness near the bony bump on the outside of the elbow, and on whether the pain gets worse when the wrist is bent back.
Treatments for the condition include rest, an arm-brace, physiotherapy, antiinflammatories, painkillers, heat-treatment, ice-therapy, steroids, acupuncture and surgery.
The new Sonocur System uses extra-corporeal shockwave therapy to tackle the problem. The results of clinical trials have indicated that the therapy works even in cases where conventional therapies have failed.
The system is an outpatient treatment carried out without the need for anaesthesia. The elbow is covered with gel and the head of the Sonocur device placed over the most painful part of the elbow.
The device then gives a preset number of low-energy pulses or shockwaves.
The sound is fired through a water-filled tip, because water conducts sound better than air. It goes through the skin and into the inflamed tendon at a rate of about four bursts of sound a second - or about 2,000 blasts for each treatment session.
It is thought the technology works by getting the tendon to regenerate itself. Just as muscles grow when they are stimulated with mechanical energy, so too do tendons.
Studies have shown that the soundwaves trigger the growth of new blood vessels in the damaged tendon.
Some people may need only one session, but most patients require three sessions before they fully recover.
