Anger at use of foetuses for 'beauty'

Aborted babies are being sold for use in beauty treatments as part of a booming 'foetal therapy' industry.

Pregnant women and girls in Ukraine are reportedly being offered up to £100 for permission to use their aborted foetuses in treatments.

The foetuses are then bought by beauty salons in Russia to provide the therapy, which promises to rejuvenate skin and eliminate wrinkles.

Some clinics also claim the treatments - injections of stem cells harvested from the foetuses - cure other conditions including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and diabetes.

Some people pay up to £10,000 for the injections but scientists have warned the treatments may not even contain stem cells - and could cost some patients their health.

The foetuses are often not tested for diseases including Aids, and many clinics are not regulated.

"We are talking about a huge, corrupt and dangerous trade in quack therapies," said Prof Vladimir Smirnov of the Institute of Experimental Cardiology.

"No one has been given any licences for injecting stem cells - these are only experiments.

"This is all being done at their own risk. This is all illegal," he added.

In Russia, the law permits only the extraction and storage of stem cells, not their use in treatment, but enforcement of the regulations is generally lax.
