Should I be vaccinated?

TB is on the rise in the UK, and London has the dubious honour of being the TB capital of Europe.

For more than 30 years, teenagers have been routinely vaccinated at school between the ages of 13 and 14; however, a problem with vaccine production two years ago brought the vaccination programme to a halt, leaving many youngsters susceptible to the disease, as has been all too sadly demonstrated by the recent TB outbreak in Leicestershire.

Vaccine production has now been re-started, and children in London and other high risk areas are now being vaccinated routinely again, and a 'catch-up' programme is being organised for those who missed out during the last couple of years.

Unfortunately, unlike other vaccines, GP's do not give the BCG ( as it involves an initial skin test to check for immunity beforehand ).

In reality, in most parts of the country the risk of catching TB is extremely low, but if you are concerned, either contact your local health authority, or see your GP, who can inform you of the arrangements for vaccination in your locality.
