Many smokers rate the fear of weight gain as their number-one barrier to quitting smoking, so it's great that you went ahead and stopped any way.
Even if you feel a bit down about the weight you've gained, just hold on to the fact that you've done your health a power of good.
To put things into context, to reach the same health risk as smoking just one pack of cigarettes per day, the average smoker would have to be roughly 125 pounds (nearly nine stone!) overweight.
The fact is that many, but not all, ex-smokers do gain some weight after they quit. One study found that 60 per cent of men and 51 per cent of women ex-smokers put on extra pounds.
There are two main reasons: firstly that nicotine alters the smoker's metabolism so that smokers burn more calories and convert fewer calories into fat and secondly that you're more likely to comfort yourself with food if you don't have a cigarette in your hand.
It's unlikely your weight will go back to 'normal' without a little more help - for example an even more intensive exercise regime and fewer high fat foods. But it sounds like you are already quite strict with yourself, and you don't want to risk becoming obsessive which could be counterproductive in the long term.
In fact if your weight is still within the normal range, it might just be that you have to accept that this is what's right for you. Ask a few friends who will give you an honest answer if you looked any better at your lower weight as a smoker.
Even if you do manage to shed a few more pounds, it's worth bearing in mind that you may never be as skinny as before, but you will be a whole lot healthier. As a guide the average long-term weight gain for quitters is about 5 pounds.
