Is there an alternative cure for hay fever?

The symptoms of hay fever - sometimes referred to as seasonal rhinitis by the medical profession - come about as the result of pollen triggering the release of histamine around the nose and eyes.

Typical symptoms of this condition include red, itchy eyes, and a runny or congested nose. The conventional medical approach to hay fever is based around drugs which suppress the immune system (steroid nasal sprays) or block the effect of histamine (anti-histamines) such as Zirtek (ceterizine).

Although hay fever is essentially caused by a reaction to pollen, many sufferers find that certain foods may worsen their symptoms by triggering the immune system and causing mucus formation in and around the nose. Dairy products are notorious for doing this, so I do suggest that you avoid these. Milk, cheese, ice cream and yoghurt are often a problem, whereas butter is generally very well tolerated. Soya and rice milk, goat's cheese and soya yoghurt and ice cream make better alternatives to dairy products based on cow's milk.

The release of histamine in the body can be dampened through the use of natural substances. Vitamin C, bromelain and the bioflavonoid compound quercetin all have natural anti-histamine action in the body and may well help to reduce your hay fever symptoms. Another natural substance which can help with hay fever symptoms is nettle.

I recommend that you try a supplement called Allergy Support which contains a blend of all these substances. Many people have found this supplement to be very effective in reducing or eliminating hay fever symptoms naturally. Take one capsule, 2 - 3 times a day. To order, phone Panacea on 020 8795 3730.

Another supplement which might help you is Luffa Complex. This is a tincture (alcoholic extract) based on the herb Luffa operculata (Sponge cucumber) which can be effective in treating symptoms such as sneezing and a runny or blocked nose.

Luffa Complex also contains six other supportive herbs including Larrea mexicana (Heartseed) which is anti-inflammatory and Glaphimia glauca which has anti-allergic properties. Luffa Complex is available in health food stores.
