Can I get omega 3 fats without eating fish?
Oily fish is undoubtedly the best source of omega-3 fats, so it is possible that as a vegetarian you might be missing out. These fats are best known for their beneficial effects on the heart and circulation, but they also encourage optimal brain and eye development of the infant when eaten by pregnant women and can help inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and eczema.
The good news is that there are ways to get your omega-3s without having to eat fish. For example you can get them from rapeseed oil, peanuts, walnuts and leafy green vegetables which all contain small amounts of the plant source omega-3 fatty acid known as linolenic acid, converted in the body to the longer-chain types found in oily fish.
By far the richest source of linolenic acid however is a supplement of flaxseed oil (made from linseeds) available in health foods stores. Taking about one tablespoon of flaxseed oil daily is about equivalent to one meal of oily fish a week.
One omega-3 fortified food you could try is Vitaquell Omega 3 margarine, available in health food stores which contains linolenic acid from rapeseed oil and flaxseed oil, along with DHA - one of the healthy long chain 'fish' fatty acids derived from a marine algae.
If you prefer to pop a capsule, supplements containing DHA from algae sources are now also starting to pop on the market. Solgar's DHA capsules cost £14.75 for 30 from health food stores; you need approximately two capsules a day to be equivalent to one oily fish meal a week.
