The commonest causes of dry, brittle hair are chemical treatments, overuse of hair driers, air conditioning and central heating.
But dryness which can't be explained by environmental factors can mean that you aren't getting enough 'essential fats' - specific fats of the polyunsaturated family which are important for locking moisture into cells, including hair and skin cells, and maintaining their flexibility.
Good food sources of the essential fats include avocados, oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils. Eating some of these higher fat foods regularly every day is important even if you are dieting because they are also involved in regulating blood pressure, the menstrual cycle, inflammatory reactions and cell division.
Dropping hair can be a sign of iron deficiency, so carry on taking your supplement as well as eating iron rich foods such as red meat, canned sardines, liver and watercress. Don't be worried if it takes a time so see improvements as your diet now won't be reflected in the health of your hair for a least three months.
