How can I calm my nerves for interviews?

Your symptoms are suggestive of what are known as 'panic' or 'anxiety' attacks. A common cause of such attacks is rapid, shallow breathing known as 'hyperventilation'. In this condition, stress can induce relatively rapid, shallow breathing which can lead to chemical changes in the blood.

Common symptoms of hyperventilation include dizziness, and tingling in the hand and/or feet. Learning controlled, deep breathing can often help to reduce the risk of anxiety and panic attacks. The Breath Book by Stella Weller (Thorsons 1999) contains advice on deep breathing and is available in good book stores.

Anxiety is often associated with an increase in the level of a substance called lactate in the blood. Caffeine, alcohol and sugar are all known to increase lactate levels and should therefore be avoided as much as possible.

Caffeine also has a powerful stimulant activity in the body and is well known for its ability to worsen anxiety. Complete exclusion of caffeine from your diet is quite likely to help your control your symptoms, and I would certainly avoid this on the day of an interview.

Many people find that they are more likely to feel anxious or suffer a panic attack if they haven't eaten. This suggests that low levels of sugar in the blood stream may trigger attacks. When blood sugar levels fall, the body often secretes a hormone called adrenaline which stimulates the release of sugar from the liver.

However, adrenaline can also trigger feelings of stress and anxiety, and may well compound your symptoms during an interview. For this reason, I recommend that you ear regular meals based around foods which give a sustained release of sugar into the blood stream such as meat, fish, eggs, brown rice, wholemeal bread, whole-wheat pasta and vegetables other than the potato.

Some people tend not to eat when they are stressed. However, it is important that you eat something about an hour before your interview, as this will help to ensure you have adequate levels of sugar in your bloodstream at interview.

One other thing to consider might be something known as Rescue Remedy. This is a blend of five 'flower essences' which can help dissipate stress and keep the body calm and the mind focused. Take as directed immediately on the bottle before the interview. You will find Rescue Remedy in your local health food store.
