What is causing my daughter's mood swings?
You know your daughter better than anyone. The fact that her behaviour worries you enough to seek advice makes me think that this behaviour is not normal for her.
It may be a sign that she is feeling vulnerable, anxious or even depressed and, possibly sub consciously, her behaviour is one way of getting your attention. There are many possible reasons:
1
She may be reacting to a change in her home or school life. Such changes can be major ones such as family break up or moving home or less obvious ones such as moving into a different class or circle of friends at school.
A loss of any kind can make a child feel insecure and sometimes bring on anxiety or depression. The death of a grandparent or neighbour or much loved pet could be such a loss. Even the threat of loss can upset children, for example, the fear of losing an ill relative or talk at home about moving to a different environment.
3
She may be being bullied or left out by friends at school, but not able to tell you about this herself. The behaviour she is showing may reflect the way other people are treating her or she may be abusing you and her sister in this way because she cannot get at the person or people who are really upsetting her.
4
There may be a problem with her health. Even something as simple as a change in her hearing or eyesight will change how the world looks or sounds to her and this could frighten and confuse her and make her behave differently. Rarely there may be a more serious health problem - for example certain types of unusual seizures can make children behave oddly or have outbursts of aggression.
There are several things you can do to help - you may have already tried some of these:
Spend some time with your daughter on a one to one basis, perhaps on an outing to the shops, park or cinema. Ask her how she is feeling and if she is worried or afraid of anything
Talk to her teachers at school, ask if they have noticed any change in her behaviour or performance and whether she is mixing normally with her friends.
Take her to see her GP for a check up. In particular discuss whether she may need referral for vision and hearing checks.
Your GP can refer her to a general paediatrician if he thinks your daughter has any kind of underlying medical problem such as atypical seizures.
Your GP can alternatively refer her to the child psychiatry team for assessment of her behaviour. The team will be able to help her and support all your family.
